200 50 years ago on September 8th 1771 Franciscan missionaries under the leadership of st. Junipero Serra founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in the land of the Tonga the forts in the chain 21 California missions and the first Outpost of Christian faith in what would become the great City and Archdiocese of Los Angeles the first peoples at the landfill to the California missions working together the missionaries who introduced them to Jesus Christ in the Catholic faith sharing the good news of God's love for us and our dignity as children of God the Catholic church has acknowledged and apologized for the mystery end of native peoples during the mission era and continues to seek ways to bring healing and promote understanding from its Beginnings the diverse community of Mission San Gabriel has persevered heeding the call us me Peto Sarah Siempre Adelante originally constructed on a plane near the Rio Hondo the mission was destroyed in 1776 and relocated a few miles away at the present site closer to the foothills of the Sun Mountain Mission Church fell into ruins following the secularization of the missions in 1834 and survived major earthquakes in 1804 1812 and 1987 along with arson in 2020 despite these challenges the faith spread and the family of God grew to become the Archdiocese of Los Angeles encompassing Los Angeles Ventura and Santa Barbara County today the Archdiocese is home to over 4 million Catholics the largest diocese in the United States this local church is a tapestry of many peoples and cultures with a Common Thread finding them as one one mission to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and one Catholic faith to be believed celebrated and laced in the Archdiocese a jubilee Year from September 11th 2021 to September 10th 2022 celebrates 250 years of Catholic space with an eye toward the next 250 years the prayer of call Jose Gomez is that face forward in Mission Jubilee will be a special moment of Grace by which to raise up a new generation of missionary disciples for our time
